Where society’s elite go to explore their darkest desires. And where promises of freedom are just manipulative lies.
For a price, the world’s most powerful people can have their darkest desires. On a private island hidden in the ocean, they may hunt humans for game, attend gladiator-style fights, participate in elaborate orgies, and freely indulge in all the deadly sins within the cosplay of ancient times.
Abducted from their life in Miami, Valoria and her younger sister wake up in this secret society, wherein Valoria is condemned to the fights and her sister is taken away to become a sex slave.
Now “property” of a sadistic tyrant, Valoria joins other men and women captives who are forced to fight and maim for others’ enjoyment, to run in their hunts, and participate in deviant fantasies. And she’s under the cold, watchful eye of Alexior, a hired trainer with his own agenda for being involved in the twisted decadence.
After surviving several near-death ordeals, a defiant Valoria focuses on her training and against all odds soon becomes a favorite. But she fights for one thing and one thing only—to be reunited with her sister and to be freed.
But promises of freedom are sometimes just manipulative lies . . .

OMG! Vanquished is one of those books which I wished I had never started! S E Green drags her reader down to the depths of hell and back again and I had so many ‘WTF’ moments, but her writing is so absorbing that I had to finish the novel in one sitting!
Valoria is exactly the kind of heroine I like in books. She is single-minded, speaks out against injustice and is a fighter. Like the other new recruits, Valoria is disorientated and confused when she wakes up in Saligia but she soon learns to use her anger to her advantage in the gladiator-type battles.
Saligia is an island of death, torture and debauchery. S E Green’s first-person narrative is graphic but allows the reader to fully understand the role our protagonist is playing as ‘Valoria, the defiant one’; she needs to kill to ensure her survival and that of her friends, so she can make her bid for freedom.
Vanquished is by no means a traditional romance, but S E Green does include some romantic elements. These remind the reader that Vanquished’s characters are still human, despite the Elite’s attempts to strip this humanity away, and we are given hope that possibly one day Valoria and her friends may be happy again.
I think one of the most effective aspects of this story is that S E Green makes us aware that Vanquished is not set in a dystopian society. The slaves have been taken from the contemporary world to fulfil the desires of the rich Elite who choose to visit Saligia, as they would any holiday resort.
Vanquished is powerful and original and I am now desperate to get my hands on anything else by S E Green! This is not a story which will suit every reader, but if you like strong characters, intrigue and occasional gore I promise you that Vanquished will not disappoint!
