Lies are the chains that keep you weighed down at rock bottom.
Officer Noel Carlson isn’t out to anyone in small-town Stratton, Pennsylvania, only to distant friends and family, so a relationship is out of the question. That doesn’t stop him from wanting one, though.
When a night-shift call brings him face to thonged butt with a hired stripper whose girl-party gig went terribly wrong, Noel takes pity on the guy and lets him go. But he can’t get the encounter out of his mind.
Shane has big-time debts to repay, especially to the brother who sacrificed nearly everything for him. His two jobs, in a deli and as a stripper, leave him no time for a social life. But a non-date of hot sex and takeout food with Noel? He can squeeze that in.
The bond they form is stronger than either expected or wanted. Especially since the step Shane’s about to take to put his brother—and his soul—back in the black isn’t quite legal. And he never calculated just how much his determination to make things right will cost him in the end.
Warning: Following on from the Cost of Repairs series, this book contains a closeted cop who’s looking for love, an indebted stripper who doesn’t believe he’s worthy, and a tasteful abundance of dirty guy sex. Also contains references to past physical abuse some readers may find disturbing.
A M Arthur is no stranger to writing novels which address painful subjects and has proved that she is able to create male characters who can love and hurt – hard.
The Truth As He Knows It is a perfect mixture of emotion and personalities; a story which we are drawn into so completely that food, sleep, and time become irrelevant.
The novel’s protagonists are Noel and Shane. Separately they are polar opposites. Noel is placid and motivated; Shane is flawed and temperamental. Together they fit, but it is Shane’s deceit which prevents them from moving forward as a couple.
Shane and Noel’s characters are wonderfully layered and despite the mistakes each man makes, A M Arthur gives them a chance at redemption. It is A M Arthur’s storytelling talent which allows us to see past their relationship, at the wider picture of peripheral events, giving us a true picture of who Noel and Shane really are. Both men have suffered past trauma and loss. Noel has chosen to deal with this quietly, accepting a job as a police officer and making weekly visits to see his best friend, Tristan.
Shane has taken a different route, working part-time at a deli, part-time as a stripper and occasionally appearing as a porn star to repay not only a monetary debt, but an emotional one, to his brother.
The Truth as He Knows It addresses homophobia, child abuse, suicide, manslaughter and death and at times I was a sobby mess, but it is Shane’s decision to open up to Noel, which gives us hope for their future.
I adored these characters and their story and I know that other fans of M/M Romance will be just a spell-bound. I can’t wait to see whose story will be next in the Perspectives series, personally I’m hoping it’s Tristan!
