Do I agree with other reviewers that ‘Paranormalcy’ is similar to ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’??!! This would put Evie in the role of Buffy, Reth as the ‘evil’ third of the love triangle Spike and Lend as Angel (*SIGH*) . . . Evie does kick-ass in her ‘bag and tag’ role which is reminiscent of Buffy, but throughout the trilogy Evie’s role does change and she progresses as a character beyond just hunting pararnormals.
On the whole I was disappointed with the trilogy beyond ‘Paranormalcy’. I felt the love triangle storyline grew repetitive, although I was always Team Lend!!!
The introduction of Jack injected some humour and fun to the plot and I was relieved that Kiersten White did not use his character to create more love complications for Evie!
I did enjoy the paranormal characters that Kiersten White conceived – particularly Cresseda, Arianna, the Dark Queen and Vivian. There was a good versus evil contrast and the atmosphere of fear and foreboding which surrounded the dark characters was at odds with the selfless and thoughtful attitude represented by the ‘good’ ones.
The ending to the trilogy is poignant and reveals that there are lessons to be learnt from everyone you meet in life.
I would recommend this trilogy to all fans of Young Adult Paranormal fiction.
